Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) is an auricular (ear) acupuncture protocol developed in 2001 by Dr. Richard Niemtzow, MD, designed primarily for rapid pain relief. Originally intended for use in military settings where conventional pain management options may not be practical, BFA has since been widely adopted in both military and civilian healthcare environments for managing acute and chronic pain conditions.
The protocol involves inserting small, semi-permanent needles known as ASP® (Aiguille Semi-Permanente) needles into specific points (referred to as zones) on the ear. These needles, typically made from gold, stainless steel, or titanium, are designed to remain in place for several days, allowing patients to experience prolonged pain relief beyond the clinical setting.
How Battlefield Acupuncture Works
While the exact mechanisms are still being studied, it is believed that auricular acupuncture modulates pain perception by stimulating nerve pathways that influence pain-related brain regions. This stimulation may lead to the release of endogenous opioids and other neurochemical mediators, contributing to pain relief. Battlefield Acupuncture has been shown to provide significant, immediate pain reduction with minimal risks and side effects.
