Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), including the Graston Technique®, uses specially designed tools to detect and treat areas of soft tissue restriction, adhesions, or scar tissue. The clinician applies controlled pressure with the instrument to mobilize fascia and stimulate a healing response.
IASTM is used for conditions such as tendinopathies, post-surgical scar tissue, plantar fasciitis, and joint stiffness. It has shown potential benefits in improving range of motion, decreasing pain, and enhancing functional outcomes, particularly when combined with stretching and strengthening exercises. The technique may work by increasing local blood flow, breaking down abnormal collagen cross-links, and promoting new collagen alignment during healing.
Treatment is generally well tolerated, with mild redness or soreness possible in the treated area for 24–48 hours afterward.
